Have I mentioned that I love my in-laws???
Yeah, you know where this is going, don't you?
My MIL went over the friggin' top today. I am so hurt and pissed, and I can only keep my little mouth shut about it for now, because I am a good DIL. Damnit!
The last time that my in-laws came to visit us, I showed them all of the things that we had gotten for Charm (not much at that point). I especially showed them the blanket that I crocheted for the Christening. The blanket that I worked on for almost a year, through ALL of my pregnancies. I showed it to them because it means so much to me, and because I am so proud of how it turned out. Well, my MIL wrinkled her nose at it, and said, "why you wanna use this? You wanna nice piece of lace for the Christening!" I explained to her that I MADE it, and that I think it is beautiful. She just shrugged her shoulders. This entire episode bothered me, but didn't surprise me. My in-laws have Italian tastes, and anything that doesn't look Italian, they don't like.
So today, I see my in-laws, and they give me gifts for the baby. The first are two little outfits, one yellow, one green, both included gold baby jewelry (an Italian thing, I think). The third gift, they explained to me, was from Italy. Upon opening it, I find a white blanket that, MIL said, "is for the Christening."
I bit my tongue.
It is a beautiful blanket, and I'm happy to have it for Charm, but it is NOT for the Christening. And I guess that MIL will not find that out until the Christening. Because I didn't say anything. Dh and I decided that the baby will wear MIL's blanket for the party after the Christening. I don't think that he thought about the fact that the Christening will probably be in the dead of summer. Oh well!
My Charm will be wearing the heirloom family gown for the Christening, and will be wrapped in the blanket that I made out of love for him/her and my angels. All three will be honored that day. And NOBODY will take that away from me.
I want my MIL to be excited about her first grandchild. I want her to be involved and buy things for this baby. I don't want her to feel slighted. BUT when it comes to certain things--don't mess with me! This is NOT her baby, and I will not be manipulated!
We'll see how long I can bite my tongue on this one. I'm not usually one to keep my mouth shut for long.

Wow .. how rude of her. It would have been one thing if you hadn't told her how special this blanket you had made was to you, but knowing how you felt about that blanket and she still did something like this. Wow .. I am stunned. I am hurt for you. You use that blanket and don't let anyone stop you. This is YOUR baby and you should be happy with how things go for his or her christening. I think it was sweet that you decided to use the other blanket for after the Christening. I think that's a nice compromise. I might would have told her where to stick her blanket. LOL. This makes me appreciate my MIL. I am so lucky to have her. She thinks I am the best and I can do no wrong (gotta love having a MIL who is your biggest fan) and now that I am giving her her first granddaughter (she has 3 grandsons) I think she is ready to have me enshrined .. lol.
UGH! I am sure you are hurt, you should be. That was tasteless and tactless. Regardless of what happens in the days to come, don't let her ruin your baby's christening or let her make you feel badly for wanting to use the blanket you made. I think it is a wonderful tribute to Charm and your angels. ((((hugs))))
Good for you. You keep standing your ground. Take a few pics of Charm in the Christening outfit with MIL's blanket to help placate her, but do not give up your special blanket just to make her happy. This is YOUR first baby you get to christen, not hers.

You are darn right you'll use the blanket you made!
It will be so special to look back on in pictures and to pull out when you need a special memory.
Don't let her take it away from you!
She'll be mad, I'm sure but this is WAY more important!
I can't wait to hear all about that special day and how great Charm looked wrapped up in his little blanket that his mommy made!
VERY special Christine!
Yes, stand your ground Christine. Your blanket is very special..can't wait to see pics of it.
Speaking of pics. can I request a new belly pic?? we're almost at the end for you!
Your baby should wear the blanket you crocheted for the Christening. Every stitch of that blanket passed through your fingers and the love in that blanket is special. Charm deserves to be wrapped in his Mother's love.
