First Baby Dream & Childbirth Class
Everyone I know always talks about the many baby dreams that they have while pregnant. I had never had one until last night. I don't know why I don't have them. I guess that even subconsciously, I'm in denial about this pregnancy.
So I dreamt that I had a baby. The baby started out as a boy, but turned into a girl. (sorry, gives you know clue on what I might *think* that I'm having!) I was very sad that I wasn't pregnant anymore. The baby was walking by it's second day. And the baby was not going to be mine. It belonged to a cousin of mine who is no longer of child-bearing age. I was sad by that, but ok, overall. I don't remember any details about a story line. I just remember that white-blond curly hair of the little girl and the pink and wrinkly features of the little boy. And I remember feeling sad, rubbing my empty midsection, and feeling sad. Weird, huh?
Kether wrote a post this week about a childbirth class that she and her dh took. With the move and everything that I have going on, I haven't even considered a childbirth class of any sort. I don't want to learn how to breathe or meditate. And I don't want to do any of those bonding exercises with the other preggos in the room. So are these things really necessary?? Can you have a baby without going to class first??? Since my dh is a doctor, and I've seen numerous episodes of Baby Story, do we really need to go to school?? Give me your stories of childbirth class, the good the bad and the ugly. Did you gain anything from going? What type did you go to? Was it worth it?? Looking forward to reading your stories.

As far as my opinion goes on childbirth classes, they are a waste of time unless you have no clue what to expect. But w/ the many baby stories episodes I think you have an idea.
As far as my class, we went to a session the hospital offered. 3 sessions. What I was taught on the breathing I didn't get to use as I had an emergency c-section due to my failure to dilate & Blake being in destress.
I know I won't go again. I think it is an experience that you truly can't prepare for. The Dr.'s talk you threw it too.
But what do I know, I was knocked out for Blake's delivery.
no you DON'T need to go to one!
We did (the night ones so like 6 weeks!) and it was a waste of time and money!
Sure, the first day I was excited, but it quickly came to be a bore.
The breathing...you'll do it on your own!
I guess the only thing I'd recommend is doing some research on medication that you'd want. Although to be honest you'll go with what you want at the time anyway!
I was dead set against an epi, but after 15 or so hrs of labor I caved and I'll tell you...it was WONDERFUL!
I'm signing up as soon as I can this time for one!
You'll be walked though everything wether you take a class or not! So, if it interests you and you have the time, go for it! But if you don't, don't think you'll miss out on anything!!
Hi! I don't think I have posted a comment on your website yet, but I have been reading for a little while now.
I thought that since you were asking about childbirth classes, I would share my thoughts.
I also took the 5 week program. My first suggestion is that if you feel the need to go to a class, do the one day class. The 5 weeks end up become long and repetative (in my opinion). One thing about the class is that the massages are nice!!
I did read a lot and watch TV shows about giving birth and that was probably where most of my information came from. I also didn't use the breathing techniques, because at that moment, I decided to use my own breathing methods (as exausting as the nurses told me they were).
I guess I haven't helped a whole bunch, but in my opinion the class didn't help that much, but being my first baby, I wanted to make sure I had as much information as possible.
I was thinking the same thing...is that silly class *really* necessary?
Good luck with your move! Not too much longer!
I don't think we needed it. Though as I told David, it might have been worth the $100 just to find out we don't go to ER if I think there's something wrong. And the massage was nice.I don't think I'll do one next time. (Am I already thinking about next time?)
I'm so glad you asked this question, Christine -- and thanks to everyone who has responded, since I'm learning, too! My OB just brought up the classes at our last visit, and I've been wondering if they're worthwhile (and worth the $$). I need to look into what's available here -- I like the idea of a one-shot deal. I'm not really up for the "bonding" with other moms, either...let me know what you decide to do...
As for the dream, that is weird. The sad part is no fun, but who knows what dreams really mean. Lord knows the preggo brain can come up with some doozies! :)
We had Baby #1 with no birthing classes and will do the same for Baby #2. I had a rough delivery (although I'm not convinced it was due to the lack of classroom time) involving three hours (yes, you read that right) of pushing. The best advice I got(way after the fact!), was from my SIL who strongly suggested using a mirror (sorry if that's TMI!) so you can see how to most efficiently push. I wanted to avoid seeing "any of that" the first time, but will defnitely try it for this go 'round! Cheers!
Birthing class was really a waste of time. I was quite confidant in my own body and it's ability to give birth. I knew I was open to a drug free birth but would request an epidural if I wanted one. I didn't think the breathing techniques were neccesary to learn and the list of *crap* they tell you to bring to the hospital was a complete waste also. The only thing I really liked about the class was that it gave DH and I one night to be together where we really talked about the baby and us. We work opposite schedules and he was able to request the dates off for teh classes. That's my 2 cents. Not necessary, but try to take some quiet time for just you and your hubby to bond, touch and connect with each other.
