The day that I found out that I was getting married...

Dh and I lived in sperate cities for a year. He had moved away from my hometown, where we met, to Philadelphia for his fellowship training. We had been seeing each other for a year and a half at the time that he moved. Before he left, we talked about commitment, and dh plainly said that he wouldn't get married until he was 100% sure, and he just wasn't there yet. Where I ceratinly appreciated his honestly, I can't say that I was happy with the answer!

So he left, and I really didn't have a lot of hope for us. I mean, we talked everyday, and we told each other that we loved one another. But I honestly didn't know if we had a future together. I was trying to stay very emotionally guarded. I did not want to get hurt.

That fall, he started interviewing at prospective practices. He had visited five throughout the East Coast. I didn't really offer any opinion, and he didn't ask for one. This again confirmed the uncertainty of our future together.

He decided to interveiw a second time at the practice here in CT, and the practice also offered to fly me out. I thought it strange, but I didn't know what was normal in this field. So we went. They put us up in a beautiful inn, that we would never spend money on ourselves. I felt a little like a princess with the big four poster bed! We received a message upon check that we were going to have dinner with one of the docs from the practice and his wife at the restaurant at the inn. So after driving around the area a bit, we got dressed up, and I prepared my best behavior.

The couple that we met were very nice, and I assumed, used to this fancy manner of living. We ordered a bottle of wine for the table, appetizers, the works. At some point during dinner, R (the doctor's wife) asked, "so when's the big day??" (Huh??) I replied, "Oh, we're not engaged." Thinking it was simple mistake. Both the doctor and his wife turned to look at Dh, as he had apparently told everyone there that I was his fiance. He replied, "Well, it's understood." (Huh??) I quickly said, "oh no it's not" and ordered another bottle of wine. Screw good behavior, I was going to drink after that!

We had a great dinner, and by the end of the meal, I was quite buzzed. We were leaving the restaurant, I was the last of the four, and I noticed Tony Bennett standing at the entrance. Of course, I made a spectacle of myself, or at least I attempted to before dh pulled me away.

Later that evening when dh and I were lying in bed, he asked sheepishly, "so, will you marry me??" I told him that I guess that I had to since he had already told the entire practice that we were engaged! We got the ring several months later.

To this day, my Dad refers to this day as "when his daughter found out she was getting married" rather than the day that I got engaged.

So, it's not a big romantic story, or really all that exciting. But it is funny, unique, and one I'll never forget!!
